I love Callalilly, I can make them last for weeks. Especially purple. I have some hydrangia's from this summer that I dried and have in a vase in the living area.

Re: Vermount
Vermount I have put that knife away to use in the garden it is a little begger for sticking into one's hand. I expect you were stronger than we were as we were only about 13.
I thought you might have been a gold prospector.

Re: Re: Re: Ciel
Yes we know about these little shows of temperament, rather too late as a rule.
I would imagine your daughter is a loving woman. Did she marry him?
I would not like cow parsley bunched in with flowers , some do this .
Nothing was wasted in the good old days, some used to plant the potato
peel, but I don't know how successful that was. My Mum was always looking around her
garden for self comer potatoes, we never seemed to plant any.

Watch yourself cutting that apple. I have both worked in potato fields and sold them
for a short period of time. It could have been worse.

My favorite cut flower is either a carnation or a pink - they work well
in with other greenery and white things like baby's breath, and they smell heavenly.

Re: Re: Ciel
I quite completely agree--EVERYONE should be given flowers now and then, though one of my girls gave her boyfriend flowers on his birthday in front of his friends, and he was embarrassed and angry about it. That was just one of the many evidences that he really was not right for her.
My grandmother showed us how the clipped tops from carrots could be put in water and they would sprout lovely fronds that would last a while.
Weeds in the garden are wildflowers outside the garden.

Re:
Yes carnations are one of my faves Jimmy , but pinks are really nice the scent is seductive. No one mentioned sweet peas. Keep warm, it sounds grisly.

Yes in those days a shilling would have bought 3 loaves of bread or fish and chips twice
Justi strange when one thinks of it now.

Re: Jean
Yes those large daisy type flowers are so easy to grow,my brother said last year pull a few stalks and as long as a bit of root remains they will grow. I expect we do swallow a few germs unnoticed at times. Well we thought we were helping the war effort Jean, but the feeling soon evaporated.

Re: Ciel
You poor little thing, every girl should be given flowers . You should kick a few legs. I thought Charlie would be sure to give you some at times. There is now a carrot that one can grow just for the foliage, I don't know if it is truly edible though. One flower grower here sometimes includes common weeds in her bouquets, but goodness I think that is a bit off. Good luck with your new plant.

I like flags, those slender wild irises,
and... well, I can't think of a flower I wouldn't like. But I don't know how long they last, other than daisies which I'm sure you know will root if left in water long enough. Why don't I know how long they last...? BECAUSE NO ONE EVER GIVES ME FLOWERS!
However, I bought a limp clump of bok choi the other day, cut off it's root end and stuck the stalks in water, and they came back to attention in a matter of a couple of hours!

yellow and white daisy, they are still in my birthday vase from feb11th, the only flowers left and there were 4 other type of flowers in it.
smiling at your omelet story, brothers do things like that, i know i had 2 sons. but it made me think of when a girlfriend and i worked at mickyD's. when you are under pressure you will do strange things, like picking up dropped hamburgers. my girlfriend set fire to the kitchen by putting the wrong paper into the warmer. but we would laugh all the way home.
and the story about the potatoes, i loved it, it just brought so much to mind and told a story about youth and money and hardships. loved it.

Yes, I hope you chaps do miss out on the cold we're experiencing over here! Regardless of whether it's Celsius or Fahrenheit, it's very disheartening to see temperature readings with a minus sign in front of them! And I guess roses are the best-looking cut flowers, although my wife actually prefers carnations . . .
