For me here it is when the pump starts working to keep the water out of the basement as the snow melts. The ground has thawed and the water can flow down to the Ottawa River. then the bulbs start to pop through the soil.

The first spring training game with the St. Louis Cardinals
playing in Florida is the first sure sign of spring in the St. Louis area. Jack Buck was the announcer the first time I heard it, and until then I hadn't even been much of a baseball fan. But his voice signalled the end of drear and cold, so ever since it's the crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd...
