Re: Naut,

Cesare had one legitimate daughter, and possibly eleven illigitimate offspring. I hope the genetics of his sociopathy didn't fall too far from the original tree. His wife was French, so plausibility stretches even further.

I, on the other hand, spoke to a descendent of Niccolo Macchiavelli outside the Macchiavelli estate in Florence. He spoke as little English as I did Italian, so it was a congenial meeting with little more than greetings exchanged. Even when such a moment is essentially meaningless in itself, there is something about it that feels like a kind of magic, of touching history.

Ciel

Ah yes, the amoral Borgias - fascinating bunch...I know a man who claims Cesare among his ancestors - he is Italian, and it's plausible...

Re: Kabu,

that is almost so funny! Even now, 500 years later, they don't want to admit that any popes were... bad.  Quite a few of them were, though, in fact.

The thing with churches, they are based on the notion that some people should not have certain information so that other particular people can keep more control of ... everything.

Of course, some people see parenthood the same way, and deny information that might actually be good for kids to know.  The thing is, kids are kids: they lack experience and judgment, and need parents to manage some kinds of information and experience.

But religions tend to look at everyone else as children.  And as you say, we are not.

Next time, tell him you are watching GAME OF THRONES.

i bought the DVD's and we watched them all...well one day the father from Wiley's church came to lunch. I am protestant OK! and for a topic  at lunch i mentioned that we had been entertaining ourselves with the Borgias. EEEKS. Lunch turned into a rather icy flop and as Wileu was seeing the so called man of God out he says to Wiley that the books and DVD's are on the Catholic forbidden List.WHAT!!!! I suppose we are now on the forbidden list...what rubbish for the 21st century, we are not children.

Geez, it's a good thing you weren't doing research on the Manson Family . . .

We need those research vacations now and then.

Judging by your post, I have to say the Borgias were not much different from the folk in our headlines these days. I do imagine that 500 years ago there were a lot of people who never had to hear about their excesses, but it's difficult for us to avoid every gory detail even as they're putting up the crime scene tape.

It's fun to get caught up in something that interests you and get totally involved in every little detail.  I do that now and then.  Once you do that, you never really forget any of it.

That is a very intersting history there that you have described, one that I was unaware of...The show sounds very intriguing...It has been awhile since I have binged on a show...I hate it when a show gets canceled, and we the viewers are left hanging.
