The most common lament from any photographer ( like my wife ) "I couldn't have the camera ready in time!" As for optimum chances, things come and go so quickly . . .

It's the thickness and density of the cloud--the water vapor, snow or rain in it-- and the position of the sun.  What really amazes me is how much of a cloud, even a dense one, is energy and how little is substance.  It looks like a mountain, but a bird can fly through it!

Have you wondered what makes the clouds look so black Ciel? I expect there is a logical explanation. I would be in awe if I saw that formation forming.

Dramatic skies is the thing, these are an amazing capture. and I agree, one cannot sit forever clicking and waiting.
