I think planning is the best way to go too to make certain the children get the best start in life they can! My nephew has friends that are barely 20 and they recently had a baby! They think they are so special with the child but they do not exercise good judgment with regard to the child so I call it the trophy baby! Now a baby less than 2 months old does not need to be out in public when the temp is triple digits so that they can let the world know they have a child! It's insanity to me! sam

I came from one of those families, Mia, and was fortunate to meet, here and there during my lifetime, strangers who reached out and helped. As an adult, I've tried to do the same for other kids, sometimes successful, sometimes not. If our society is to flourish, more of the fortunate will have to hold out their hands and provide intellectual, emotional and sometimes material aid to those children, or even to the parents, who seem to get stuck on the bottom rungs of our ladders. We certainly can't wait around for our governments to do it!

Mia

Another one of your superb, thoughtful posts, which deserves more than the brief comment I can give you here tonight! That's why I shall adress the issues you raise in a post (or two or three? LOL) of my own. Let me just say that the trend of the precipitously declining birthrates of the indigenous populations in all Western countries is probably irreversible...

I don't know where to even begin on this one . . . Yes, our society is getting dumber and dumber with each passing generation, and there are probably a myriad of reasons why. As for those "programs" you mentioned, you actually hit a "soft spot" as far as I'm concerned. I've failed to see the humor in seeing someone get struck in the groin a long time ago! Watch any film from the '30's through the '50's which starred such notables as The Three Stooges, Charlie Chaplin, Laural & Hardy, The Marx Brothers, etc., and even with all of that roughhousing and slapstick going on, you'll never see any of them take a shot in the jewels! Now, it's a comedy staple, and I for one am tired of seeing it! Try imagining someone finding it hilarious to strike a woman in the breast, causing her to double over in pain, and then seeing it over and over and over in movie after movie after movie. I think you would get tired of seeing it too . . .

spme people dont believe in birth control as their religion dictates  I had my last child at age 42 and I was stupid to think I couldnt get pregnant with a man that had just had a heart by past surgery and he was even older

Yes, we are breeding Idiocracy

in this country, the factors of who is producing the future citizens, the educational system in this country, the values that are inspired and pandered to by both the entertainment industries and the capitalist system that will do anything to sell anything, which, now I think of it, applies to the politcal system as well...

These factors have always been in play, from ancient times to present, but we are in a Perfect Storm situation here, and need to take both self-indulgence and selfishness out of play.

I wonder if what you are seeing comes from our educational system, we rank 26th in the world, and yes it is bad and getting worse...You really should check into common core, a federal program to dumb our kids down under the guise of common goals.

No if you think about the past or like me am old enough to remember poor families who hadn't had schooling and how we used to laugh about some of their ways....i don't think things have changed much, just that there are more of us. I was priveleged with my growing up and consequently spoilt and ign orant....Oh but I am not suggesting any one on blogit is ignorant, just that we as people think we have come further than what we really have.

I have a feeling that there has always been a part of humanity in every nation that has been looked down on by the more well-to-do and the better educated, in the ways they entertain themselves in bawdy ways (ie:  the old limericks before movies) and the large, poor families.  I doubt it is getting much worse, we just notice more because we have so much awareness now through technology.

Like you, I feel that stupidity is being bred as well...I wonder how many kids I would want to have. It's not something that I have thought too much about. Beings that I am single is why.
