I am afraid I am one that never really thought or thinks about their issues.  We have plenty issues here in the US to get over and above.

I should add that ol' Mo simply established the Arab customs of his day as allegedly divine and hence immutable laws...

A really excellent post! And you're absolutely correct: I did not mean to suggest that the problem we are faced with is just a problem for women - it's a problem for all of us! What I did mean to say (but didn't make clear) was that those public voices of feminists in the West generally do not adress it!

As far as I am concerned, it is one of the scandals of our age that roughly 750 million women (that's about half the world's Muslim population) are second class citizens in their countries because a 7th century bandit, killer and pedophile claimed that his God so decreed it! (Of course, he wasn't the only author of the Koran, but that's irrelevant for all practical purposes, since Muslims believe he was the only recipient of his God's word). And it is partly for that reason that all of Islam is a scandal...

And yes, it is also correct - many Muslim women are perfectly happy with their lot. But there are those courageous women who are making their voices heard - not in the West, but in Iran and Saudi Arabia...

A very interesting read, I find this to be...Like you I feel that change is going to have to come from within.

fabulous post because it is based on common sense rather than emotion and i have read it through several times ...critically, and find more to applaud with each reading.

I believe that even with the modern day freedoms that we enjoy, even we in the western world must stay vigilant to not find our liberties and rights eroded.

mmmm well I have had many discussions with my husband on this topic.  We usually but heads or just agree to disagree.  Muslims consider their pride and honor almost sacred.  The women of their family are the key to it.  Should she do anything to dishonor herself she not only dishonors herself but her entire family. I could elaborate more but right now I think I will do my best to gather my thoughts and maybe post the entire thing as an entry....too long to put here

One of the problems, Mia, is that women don't disagree

with their treatment. Mothers-in-law inflict violence on their sons' wives routinely in India, even setting them on fire.  Girl children are despised, not only by men.  It is the culture, it is, perhaps, Stockholm Syndrome. It's very complex, difficult to change a culture.  At least in some parts of the world, in some parts of the culture, the idea of female equality and rights has begun to trickle in.
