I was glad to read this particular post Mia.  Not too long ago, I read that the grandson of the late Josef Stalin tried to sue the Russian government for allowing the people to "defame" his name.  That man was nothing short of a monster...Russia's own Hitler...why shouldn't they be allowed to speak their minds about him?

Now, I do in fact realise that what I wrote above has nothing really at all to do with your subject, but I commend the Russian government for making it illegal to spread anti homosexual materials in any form.

Now if only they could learn at last to tolerate the Jewish people who live there and in the Ukraine.

so many religions and cultures reject homosexuality as if it is a contagious disease....and as we of intellect know...it's neither contagious or a disease.....and if our politicians and religious leaders who are supposed to lead and guide us can't figure it out what hope do we have for a global community

It wasn't until I found religion that I saw the beauty of the world around me, the love of Christ for all.

These "laws" may be new to Russia, but the "concept" of forcing certain types of control on others isn't! Things of this nature have been going on for years, in all societies, with all walks of life! In fact, that was the primary reason "organized religion" became organized in the first place! And by the way, why oh why do people continue to say gays and lesbians? If "gay" means homosexual and "lesbian" means homosexual, wouldn't Gay cover everybody . . . ?

great post ....how weird it is for me to try to understand a little of

Russia. I grew up with the USSR and the cold war and when all religion was banned. now we have this!!!! To me it is a reaction against Muslims and Jewish people but I don't actually know of course.

And I am a fan of our Pat too...marvelous writer!!!!

I don't expect that will happen--what you write in your last sentence.  For every person in this world that is working for it, someone else is against it.

I am glad that we do not have those laws here in the United States.

Mia

An excellent post! I was beginning to write a longish comment that was threatening to turn looooooooong, so I stopped and decided to write a post (or even several) inspired by this.

Oh, and it's indeed a turtle sitting on that window sill, though not a live one...

Too bad they didn't go with legisltating

against insulting religions and homosexuals.

Pussy Riot made a statement of defiance aimed the two most establishment establishments in their country.  They got slapped down for it, and though the charge was something about sacrilege, of course it is pretty clear it is as much sacrilege to insult the government as the church.

If the new law doesn't specify the particular church, maybe it is attempting to protect religions generally.  That would be a big change for that part of the world, famed for its pogroms and other intolerances towards the Jewish people.

I am totally with you, in disgust at making laws against gays and lesbians.
