Friday

I enjoyed your post today Kabu as I always do.  I know we need the rain, but it is a pain when it interfers in what I want to do!

Hush whisper who dares ever thought of moving to warmer climes. No probably not well you will have to keep your hats on a lot of heat escapes that way. Seriously though it is a problem for a lot of folk here, I don't think there is cheap heating, perhaps they will start fracking in Canada or move gas from USA. It is a problem as one grows older and feels the cold more.

I hope you figure out the best deal and get it installed without a hitch!  The clever Coyote should be able to do well with this!!

Kabu...

Everything is growing like bad weeds down here, including the bad weeds...the grass is growing ferociously from one day to the next, and I'm glad we have a reliable young man to cut it for us once a week...

I understand the US is offering tax breaks to citizens for converting

to solar or solar-assisted systems, does your tax man do that? Although I imagine solar panels wouldn't do as well when laden with snow.

A wood burning stove might be an alternative answer if the other choices don't work out! Good luck!

Let's have a party

The Taser Parties are getting more popular all the time.  Everyone is getting them in lots of different colors...pink for Kabu and blue for Wiley.  They come with a video to show you how to load them and how to use them and what they do to people.

We had a wood stove for primary heating for years.

The pressed sawdust logs, nothing fancy added, are longer and cleaner burning than wood, though not as romantic. We got 5 and 8 pounders, and for kindling, took a hatchet to a log, and whacked the end until it split off a smaller bit.  Fire-starters are very handy early in the morning or late in the evening when you've been out, and want a quick start.  We had a fan behind our stove, to blow the warmth into the room, but you need enough space behind the stove to do that safely.

We had considered a pellet stove, but those require electricity, so if power goes out--no warmth!

Wood heating dries the air something fierce, so a pan of water on top helps add moisture to the air.

Those presslogs are not cheap, we paid about $1 and $1.30 per log.  But they do burn longer than wood.

Kabu

You can alwas install a wood stove that'll heat the whole house! That's what your ancestors did, and mine, not all that long ago...

What a bother.  It sounds as if no matter what you pick you are in for a long, expensive ride.  Cute picture.  The two gnomes that lived on the patio next door have moved away.  I miss seeing them when I am coming and going.

I'm sure all the options will be closely studied and the best choice made. My personal preference is wood. Cheaper by far, but a lot of work, and it is confining; one can't disappear for a couple of days and leave the stove without constant attendance. Electric backup is good, if people would wear sweaters.....

I myself switched from oil to natural gas because of the cost...The Maryland government does not handle the heating...It's interesting to read of other's experiences.
