Re: JimmyA, his name was Todd Beamer.

Doing a search for  "Flight 93" brings up a lot of material to read about those 40 people who did what needed to be done.

Re: Annicita, I have not heard that story, but I'd be astonished if a woman

had been chosen to make that flight, in 1969. Our society was not that progressive then, and it is hard to believe that it would have taken any great manipulation to keep a woman out of the running.    I'm interested in finding out more about this, if you can give me a link, or reference I can look up.

In any case, this makes another important point about heroes: they are human beings who have found themselves in extraordinary circumstances that gave them an opportunity to shine out. I have read some of Armstrong's 'credits' and it seems to me he fully merited the opportunity.

I agree with Kabu. A true hero isn't worried about fame or recognition, and there are many amongst us. In my opinion, the last "hero" I recall reading about was the gentleman who yelled "Let's roll," and lead a group of passengers to force flight 93 down onto the Pennsylvania field on 9/11 to keep it from crashing into the White House. I feel terrible not being able to recall his name . . .

As you say, there are plenty of heroes around.  Quite often they are never appreciated in the way they should be.

Ciel

Another one of your many thoughtful posts that would deserve more than a brief response. But I only have time for telling you that, as always, I appreciate your stimulating insights...

I think their are heroes and angels among us everywhere. We just need to look for them.

wonderful post as usual...you are a real thinker and I expect that there

are many heroes in every society, ones that aren't splashy enough to reach the mass media. that just quietly live their lives helping others.

Sadly it takes wars to make a great hero Ciel but only if you win.

I don't consider Neil Armstrong a hero.  Did you know that there was a woman in the space program at the same time as he was?  Did you know that he was worried about her going on the mission instead of him so he went to talk to JFK to make sure that didn't happen....He would have been a hero to me had he won that on his own merit and not at the manipulations behind the scene
