CCT

Interesting method of dealing with the flies on the raspberries! I kind of use that method when I've been in the woods with my doggie, who always attracts hundreds of 'em. Before we get to the car I make him sit, walk up to the car, open the door and call him - and in his mad dash he leaves all the flies behind...And I really had to spend time with your poems...

Re: Re: CC

I see I left out something in my comment.  It was not the parking lot where we live, it was the parking lot of our Country Club Plaza Shopping Center.  I'm glad they weren't here where we live.  That would have been scarey.  There was another swarm in the same place a week later and one at the Kansas City Royals Baseball Stadium and bee keepers were called and came immediately and took care of those situations.

Chiff.Chaff.

We like the raspberry's and most of 'em come north from California. We do have them growing wild on the property but the crows and bear get to them before we do. I admire your gardening skills, never did much of that except on a whim. Have a happy weekend my friend.

Re:

Well Jay I may be picky but I like to buy washable fruit cherries etc unless it is for jam and then I like a few wasps mixed in.

You know CCT, sometimes I never give a thought to what is ready unless it is in my garden. We have fresh raspberries all year long in the stores and when the price drops to a point that I can afford them I just assume they must be ready. For all I know I eating the ones the flies caught up to.

Re: Pat

Well Pat, I had my first strawberry out of the tunnel yesterday, there is a very heavy crop and they do take a terrible lot of water, as we have a hose ban, you can guess it would be hard work, fortunately with my buts and containers I can save 500 gallons of rainwater, but I want it to rain, to refill them  as I have nearly pumped them dry. Some of the flowers I picked have a clove scent I left them in this little room with the computers and it does smell rather nice in here, well apart from myself.

Re: Taps

Goodness Taps a local beekeeper would have been in his element. A bit scary though for anyone who did not understand the process.

Re: Justi

Hi Justi, I think I like the flavour of raspberries best, but I got it into my head to grow some blackberries thornless one's , the reason being that they seem easier to grow and do not need replacing very often, with hindsight I should have had a row of raspberries, I just remembered I have two loganberries and I must remember to throw a net over them.

Re: SAM

Sam you have your dilemma, you do not want to plant into your garden and then dig up later. I somehow don't think you will get many raspberries out of a plant in a pot. Personally I would bung the whole lot in the soil and keep it well watered with a tiny bit of fertiliser. I hope you feel a bit better now read you later

I certainly enjoyed the poems! The first one felt like an oration of a sort or at the least a monologue directed to the listerner with the idea to impart what one has learned whether it be life lessons or experiences and such! My raspberry plant that I have had in a pot simply decided not to grow, it still appears to be dormant! I have never seen anything like! I pruned it and there are several living, or so it seems, branches but they are not responding! I planted some annual around the base in the event the plant decided to call it quits and I would be left with an eyesore or a mess to clean up! I really wanted to see what would happen, too! sam

There are lots of strawberries grown here but not a lot of raspberries. I make a raspberry catsup that was well received when we did it. I love the poems, you make me think sometimes enough to smell the wood burning.

You trying to outrun maggot flies made me remember last year when swarms of bees were trying to take over our Parking lot.  One woman came out from shopping to find a very large apron of bees laying over her car.  Instead of calling a bee keeper to come get them, she got in her car and tried to outrun them.  Last I saw of her she was driving down J.C.Nichols Parkway with the swarm of bees tied to the car by what looked like apron strings.

The flowers are so pretty, and so close-up and focused.

Raspberries always seemed to be more trouble than they are worth, but I do like raspberry-flavored hot chocolate or a nice raspberry tea on a chill night. :)
