Bel, it looks like your job you have at Starbucks is the MOST "respectable job" around and it is a most rewarding one! No money can make up for the love and concern you give your customers. Great post.

Bel, even just the tone of voice used is important in CSR...
When I filled in on the switchboard at one of the tree insurance brokerages, I was told more than once that my "soothing" voice made some clients feel better just listening...then when they'd come into the brokerage to pay their premium or ask questions in person, it was, according to them, a good experience rather than a tense experience...I think we're all CSR's every day in one way or another....

I truly appreciate...
People in customer service who aren't resentful they have to work odd hours or weekends, I worked weekends for years and it became harder to bear particularly when my family had something that I would miss. I may have to go back to that, but I think earning a paycheck will put a smile on my face. I like an Almond Roca Mocha!

Starbucks! When you're tearing apart, a sympathetic gesture from a total stranger can count a lot. Your empathy lightened her load some, I'm sure. Great post!

What a beautifull story you wrote. Actually is almost appears that it's more than a story and I'm searching my brain. Ah! Got it.
It was an event to all who read it.

What a comforting gesture for the woman whose mom was beginning chemo! I like the variety of people you encounter, too! When my kids go for a new job I tell them to take the one that best suits their comfort zone, there are times when money isn't everything! sam

Re: People sometimes bitch about how expensive Starbucks is.
Pat,
I have to say I have never been treated with more respect by any employer. Starbucks doesn't have employees it has partners and from store level to corporate level they work hard to ensure that the way we are treated.
The benefits for me are HUGE. I will be getting FULL dental, eyeglass and medical at the beginning of next month. I have been without health care since Carl left me in 2007. My last pair of eyeglasses cost me almost $300.00 between the glasses and the eye exam...trust me that adds up pretty darned fast.
Starbucks also gives away A LOT. Any non-profit can go in and ask for a coffee donation for their event. We donate to several kids sports teams in the area as well as a few charities, etc... Yes, the coffee is more expensive, it's also good coffee and believe me, I have remade a persons drink as many as 4 times because she couldn't get the exact right taste. We got that drink right for her. We understand that we charge a premium rate and in turn we try to give the customer a premium experience. LOL maybe I should go into PR.

People sometimes bitch about how expensive Starbucks is.
But I tell those folks one reason it's costly is that baristas get benefits and a decent wage. Buying Starbucks coffee is supporting the notion of respecting the value of employees and treating them like human beings. And the coffee's great! Your experiences could be worked into scripts for their commercials :)
