I have watched some of those hoarding shows.
It would be very difficult to be a family member of one of them and have to save them from themselves.

well I guess you touched a sore spot some of us have, like a boil that
never quite heals, breaks down just when you think you have it better. the thought of being....put away.....taken over....scary stuff. My goodness your mother had a tough life.

Well, yes, you did present another side of the story, but still, our views
will vary and abound.

See, the thing is I don't think that you can ever...
predict or even steer how the readers will respond or see your point. It happens that way for me sometimes that readers all jump on one aspect and seeming miss another part that is bigger in my mind.
and i think sympathy is with patrick initially at least because one is not hearing the POV of the sister who kept going back to the house to find unspeakable horrors
as for today's.. I'll come back later

Okay - so we didn't get it yesterday - doesn't mean you failed necessarily - it could just mean we're all a gang of bleedin hearts, because we fear one day to be in that position - where we will not be allowed to make our own decisions.... for ourselves. Reading back over it, I can see where you subtly pointed out the family's dilemma too. This post, however, blows my mind! Your mama was strong - had no other choice but to be that way - and wow - what a book it would make! Right up to the end - to where the family finally was obliged to take over, and her forgetful sweetness at the end.
