Straightforward
I would immediately think 'what the heck does he/she want?'  But I would thank them at the same time.

I Think that one should be able to  judge the motivation behind such an action. Perhaps such a person is just inclined to help. I have never had anyone help me who didn't want to unless we had negotiated or a payment was expected, I've had plenty of those.
