sardonic to me suggests a general attitude

Sarcastic is more directed at a specific target.

I have heard of 'sarchasm' too: that gap between one's sardonic wit and the target actually getting it.

Pedalling past pastures, I periodically pop a potassium pill...

And I completely agree with your distinction between 'sardonic' and 'sarcastic' - it's one I make myself and hence it must be right, LOL. In a nutshell, I see sardonicism as less biting than sarcasm...

And speaking of words: If you haven't already, you should definitely read Winchester's The Professor and the Madman, the story of the creation of the Oxford Dictionary (which I prefer to Webster)...

potassium is always an issue

especially for those who drink a lot of fluids.  It is good to know all these sources!

Happily, I love beet greens!

My friend, Kilroy, sent me a link for Merriam-Webster's word a while back. Each day they send me a word, with pronunciation, an example sentence, and the how it originated. I save them all. I hope you remember where your 'sardonic' character is lurking - and I'm with you on the second potato over the beet greens.
