Every politician says things he/she later regrets and often later retracts (as Paul later did, vehemently). It's also likely that his words were taken out of context and blown out of proportion (Isn't that so often the case with media coverage of politics?) But that doesn't change the fact that the words were actually uttered, whether he meant them as they were taken or not.
Here's the direct quote:
“Well, what it gets into then is if you decide that restaurants are publicly owned and not privately owned, then do you say that you should have the right to bring your gun into a restaurant even though the owner of the restaurant says, ‘Well, no, we don’t want to have guns in here,’ the bar says, ‘We don’t want to have guns in here because people might drink and start fighting and shoot each other’?” he said. “Does the owner of the restaurant own his restaurant? Or does the government own his restaurant?”

and many other places online and on YouTube. Speaking of the YouTube video of the interview, it's interesting that he never actually says "YES" or "NO" to whether or not individual businesses should be permitted to deny service to patrons based on their minority status, i.e., being allowed to hang a "No Blacks Allowed" sign on the door. He says repeatedly he is not in favor of discrimination. However, he implies "NO" by stating that he does not support the Civil Rights Act in its entirety, specifically this section:
"All persons shall be entitled to the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities and privileges, advantages and accommodations of any place of public accommodation, as defined in this section, without discrimination or segregation on the ground of race, color, religion or national origin."

R ln another example of prejudice that could escalate I’m a white that received age discrimination from the Costi’s coffee house chain in New York. The barista made me and other customers over 30 eat dinner at a narrow counter while high school students ate in a booth. BC-A, Bill’s RJLst

The thought of reversing Civil Rights is outlandish! We need to embrace our differences and certainly never, ever take steps backward! What an incredulous idea by him! UGH all the day long for me! sam
