A poem is more than one thing--
It is not just what awakened in the poet and wanted out... It is also what it awakens in the reader... each reader, a different awakening. No matter what the poet intends, or means, the poem will form different intents with the different minds it enters.
So--it is interesting to know what the poet had in mind, and as a poet, I love to hear what others discover in the words I laid down, and so to discover that the poem, like any of my children, has gone on its own way without me, and comes home again to teach me things I didn't know, show me things I didn't realize.

I am never fond of explaining my poetry because I always want to see what the reader got from it without a prompt! The only thing I really contend is that my imagery is not about me! sam
