Chuck, this post reverberated, so I turned to Shamsuddin Muhammad-i-Hafiz-i-Shariz, a great poet and, who some say, was Sufi.  You will know of him I'm certain.  But...permit me to post these few lines from one of his many works.  It is a narrative poem titled: NO GUARANTEES and it works at several levels of meaning, this is just a sample.  Joab

Wherever you are going, go alone; for the road

to enlightenment is very narrow and full of curves.

And take your wineglass with you, for there are
