Re: Awww Sam! Sour grapes?
 Samster,
And after I exercised extreme self-control by NOT mentioning that Michigan won, MSU lost, and Ohio State lost, TOO. All is right with the world, but I bit my typing finger and didn't tell you about it. You probably already knew.

I have had a lot of money, pissed away a quarter million bucks in less than two years about ten years ago, made 50 thousand + for many years! Now I have the least amount of money I have ever had and I am the most content and have more than I ever had! So being up and down has made me stronger and I know I will die fed and housed! 'Bout them Lions, grrrrreeeaat! NOT! lol sam

Well put! As Nietzsche observed, "What doesn't break me makes me stronger..."

Very well done.  This is pretty much the way I was raised--big family and we all worked to do our share.  My Dad was always working two jobs and growing a garden and hunting and fishing to feed a family of nine.  Seven kids can eat an awful lot of food and drink a lot of milk.  Mom sewed most of the girls clothes from chicken feed sacks along with everything else she had to do.  I think that children have to see this kind of working together in order to really appreciate what they have.

Re: Re: I hope that I didn't leave readers with the wrong impression!
No worries, Guy, I didn't think you were implying anything in the way of suffering=nobility, or that it's not good to have a full any happy life with nice possessions.  I only understood that our attachments to such things as cars, trinkets, etc., when so many do without the basic necessities can be the undoing of society.  One must be aware of life's ups and downs, and ready to accept good fortune with joy and gratitude.

Re: I hope that I didn't leave readers with the wrong impression!
 Eyes,
Just to correct any possible misunderstandings, I live reasonably comfortably, am soon to be free of all debt, and intend to move back into my own cozy home (on five wooded acres in the farmland of northern Michigan) with Marilyn, to attempt to live happily ever after. as a couple, again.
I have never lived in my car, been homeless, and haven't missed many meals, unwillingly. I don't want anyone to think that this is, or ever was, the case for me.
I have suffered, as have we all. I don't think that suffering makes one noble, just for having suffered. I hope that sometimes, one or two things that I mention, will inspire thought, reflection and introspection, that's all. If one can avoid pitfalls along life's journey, because of something I have written, I'll be proud.
As far as experience being the best teacher, I believe that sometimes, "The HARD WAY is the ONLY WAY that we learn."

Wise words well spoken, my friend.  It's true that money is the root ofall evil.  But I think evil sows the seeds of social collapse.

I'venever had a year that I didn't have to do without many things - and I'mproud of that fact.  The important things in life - family, love, compassion, gratitude - these are priceless.  It's fun to have THINGS, but everyone should have to do without for a long enough stretch to appreciate reality.
