There will always be dictionary lovers--the kind that just have to have a bound volume in their hands, those who love to flip the pages.  There will always be those who must have a pen to enjoy writing a lovely script, a book to read by lamplight.  There will always be.

Krisles
Oh, don’t get me started (a subject I’m quite passionate about).  Will people remember how to write a proper letter, insert a sensitive or compassionate note within a greeting card, or know the richness of communication when engaging in something as fundamental a job interview?   Teens, I believe, are the ones most impacted by the onset of texting or the computer being so readily available for homework assignments.  I remember when my daughter (now 25) had an assignment or essay to write requiring some research. I was insistent that only one item one her bibliography could be a computer source.  I marched her down to a library and she would have to check out books – yes books – in order to obtain the rest of the information she needed.  She claims she could still write in proper form if she needed to (versus the abbreviated, bastardized “texting” style) but I suspect her writing skills have slipped and she would have to dig pretty deep to remember grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, and even spelling.  I suppose my theory will be tested when she returns to school this coming September.   Sorry for rambling on in your blog....

Very valid observations and I agree particularly with what you say about texting: I just hate it, never understand it and don't want to try. In my mind it's a violation of the written and spoken word.

Hell, we're even seeing texting  right here on Blogit........people's posts are twitter passages.......it's hard to understand what is being said, let alone gleaning some sort of meaning out of the characters......

STRAT (AND SAM)

Our genes are showing......exactly what I was trying to say.....true expression, the give and take.....all the colors in the box......how will they express themselves?   And does the way we are able to express ourselves inform who we become? mumble, mumble, mumble, mutter,mutter.....

And Sam, how can anyone who loves words not feel the concern......perhaps writing will be the quilt making of the future.....

I guess we can learn to do cave drawings, or something...
If one person reads, the written word will survive. The question to me, really, is how many will love language, enjoy words like wonderful toys? In the coming idiocracy, I'm guessing that expository expression will be the only understood means of communication and things like irony, humor, satire, pathos, etc. will be largely unknown and certainly not understood...

I ponder what will happen to the written word as well. Will anyone even know the fundamentals after a time! sam
