I'm probably too late with the suggestion this time, but
when I can't find something, and it's really down to the wire, I call it. "OH, LIGHTER!! LIGHTER, WHERE ARE YOU??? LIGHTER!!!" This actually works.

Not physic, but I do this also
I lose mine all the time. Could it be in the car? Under the PC desk? By the phone? Where were you at last? Back track and think.
