It's so sad that Richard feels he needs to suffer. I come across so many people like that. Most haven't articulated it and are less extreme than Richard, but they are people who enjoy ill health and are strangely at peace when they are suffering. Yet our God (whatever you may conceive God to be) doesn't require atonement - forgiveness is free. That's the most difficult lesson of all for folk to grasp. We are really suspicious of freebies!
