We Southerners have a lot of bizarre idioms.
I've never understood "happy as a mudlark," or "fat as mud," for example. Others, such as "dumb as a stump," "dead as a wedge," and "ugly as a mud fence" are pretty self-explanatory
And then there's the world famous and off used additive to describe someone a bit less endowed with brains..."bless his/her heart."
