Yes, it is the year 1500 AD, the year of the reigning Pope's jubilee.

It was a time of enormous change and drama in Europe, following the 1490s that saw the accession of Pope Alexander VI and the rise of the Borgias; the death of Lorenzo di Medici, one of the greatest of all patrons of the arts and of the rise of Humanism; the creative moments of Da Vinci, Botticelli, Michaelangelo, and other genius painters and sculptors; the time of the fanatic monk Savanarola, and his bonfires of the vanities; the discovery of the New World; the blossoming of the Renaissance in Italy, from whence it would spread to light all of western Europe's way out of the Dark Ages.

Everything I know about, I also learned outside of school, and mostly so I could write this book!

so we're actually in the 16th centurary here. you've done an excellent job conveying this so far. these historical figures ring a bell, but unfortunately my history teachers never dwelt on the 16th century very long
