Could it be...
They scooped up a lump of martian poop? That would give pretty crappy results though. It is amazing when you consider the communications take 8 minutes one way!

just heard they got it fixed
the soil was packed too tightly to be sifted through the screen.
so they've sent orders to the lander to shake the scoop over the screen so that the loose particles will drop down and not the whole clump.
