I can vouch for the effectiveness of the plastic sheeting, majroj.  Back in old Blighty it is still upmarket to have double glazing - here I have triple glazing in winter.

Ah, Redwood City and points west!

Funny how much hotter the Milpitas hills are versus the Peninsular hills? The ocean and Bay are great moderators, but those hills facing west in the East Bay bake all afternon.

We benefit from the breeze forced through the Carquinez Notch all the way to the Sierran Foothills, but especially in the Delta...Hence, "the Delta Breeze".

Los Angeles potentially has similar weather tempering from the ocean, but they've paved it all and overlaid it with smog and human bodies. Damn shame.

My favorite trick to beat the heat is to hit the heights in San Fransisco!
my summer home awaits...

sam4454, fire has that effect on you when it's trying to gert away.
The other bystander who joined me turned out to be a former US Forestry Service firefighter. Couple of old fire dogs.

Re: maj, today as I drove back home, I spotted black and then white smoke

Benzinha, were they getting high on the fumes?

The firehose was on a wide dispersed stream, more like a full body instantaneous sprinkler party. If they'd used straight styream I'd hae been knocked back into the local Creek ten feet below...NOT so refreshing.

john mcnab, thanks.

I tried that by making a wood frame to sort of gently jamb into the window frames so it could be removed without leaving tape or staple traces, but it failed. I used stytofoam sheets without foil, it was like looking out into an avalanche when I opened the blinds!

Someone pointed out that if you have wooden window frames and seal out the moist indoor air, it can help prevent the moisture from condensing and pooling on the frame, preventing warping and dry rot.

maj, today as I drove back home, I spotted black and then white smoke

on the road ahead.

I began to pray, let it NOT be my house. Muchos fire personnel arrived quickly and the flames and smoke died immediately. What a blessing for the owner, who lives near me.

I no longer leave my Mexican seven day candles burning inside their glass encasings when I go out. I imagine my dogs doing something stupid and try to prevent it.

But focus is all and I can see you getting hit with a stream of water, while beating on a fence and them so focused that no one saw you, either. Warner Brother cartoon, you hit the wall of your house, blown backwards and then melt into a puddle with the rest of the water.

I carry a fire extinguisher and will hand it to people whose car has caught fire but will not wield it myself anymore, too old.....and Tucson cars do catch fire in the summers. I might try to put out my own, however.

We around here do dog and kiddie in the car lookouts, as they quickly baked to well done in this sun.

I look inside each car as I pass it on my way inside somewhere, just glancing, but, ya never know. Today I saw a pitbull in a car in a parking lot, but found its owner hunched down in the front seat painting her toe nails with the air conditioner on....

So, my favorite hot dog story was a Jack Russell Terrier laying across the top of the back seat of his owner's car, a convertible with the top down, parked under a shade tree at the bank, owner inside the bank. I stood there talking to the dog and he was old and barely interested anymore. Now, that's an old Jack.

I like to head for the mountains. I was amazed as well that you were so engrossed that the fd eluded you as well. All I could think was truly focused!  sam

Keeping out the heat?  I'll get back to you.   As for keeping out the cold, we stretch and tape plastic sheeting across the windows - clear plastic sheeting of course.

What a shocker!
The adrenalin pumping through you, I bet you didn't even notice the fire dept.... Splash! What a surprise for you. I bet you were cooled off for quite some time. ;)
