Re: Hmmm

Yeah, there are certainly things about the city we'd miss, and it is a hard decision to make. But in the end, I think quiet living will win out.

Like I told Azur, the crime probably isn't as bad as I made it sound--it just feels a lot worse, considering how rare it used to be! I suppose I'm just longing for the good ol' days...

Re: Well...

Start away Azur - I need all the information I can get, especially from someone who's actually made the change!

Since I work from home, my job shouldn't be affected too much. Mark however, would likely have to get into a different field altogether, or start commuting into the city every day.

Since we don't have anything within walking distance now, I don't think that would be a big adjustment. And I'm deathly afraid of public transit, so buses and trains wouldn't be missed at all!

You're right, Alberta certainly doesn't have the crime of major cities like New York or L.A., or anything even remotely close to London or Dublin. I think the reason I notice the crime here so much, is because it never used to happen. In the 90's, Calgary only saw about 12 murders a year, if that. Now, in February of 2008, we've already had more than that! It could definitely be worse--but it used to be so much better!

Thanks for reading, and thanks for the awesome comments

Hmmm
I think city life and country living are both attractive in their own ways.  tough choice!  It is a pity about the crime, alot of that going around everywhere!

Well...
I don't know if I want to say such too much as someone who left a big city. It will just sound like sour grapes I know.

Mark is right about the job. That is the hardest part about living in a quiet place, if you can't get the work or money that you are capable of earning. We knew when we left the city we could never replicate our top jobs and earnings elsewhere.

I walk everywhere here but there is nothing here... in the city I could find all I needed within a walk. Here I drive more than ever.

I miss the choice of catching a train or bus where I could sit and think or read and where I only bought fuel every  month. I miss deliveries of groceries.  I

Forgive my naivety, but I  had no idea that Alberta is such a crime-ridden place. I lived in London, not the Canadian one, for years, where we had bombs,  and people would ask how could I live there? You live with the knowledge that something could happen but it doesn't happen to most people - most people are like us - and crime can happen anywhere.  Perception of crime is usually worse than reality. Yes,  if terrible crimes occur in your street/area frequently, then I'd move. See, told you I shouldn't start ;-)
