I know the people who found that money probably feel the same way now. I, too, think I would have contacted a lawyer first. That's a shame that it happened that way to you. Wow.

probably would give it back
But, I also would probably do the research on the value of the money, and might have contacted a lawyer to facilitate the return.

me and my cuz was in buisness togeathere back in the ninty's we tore a wall out and found ten thousand dollars in a brown envelope we gave it to the owners because we knew them we did not even get a thankyou later on his dad my uncle told us they bought the house from an old pig farmer that went into the nut house all the bills were from the 60's and 70's before they bought the home. so knowing what I no now, not no but hell no I would not give it back.
