Well, then, I stand corrected, HEARMENOW.

Thanks for the info.

garbage!
Um garbage men make great money-as u know Philly is a union town and that is a coveted job for the union inclined masses here. Ya know, all those people who don't need that h.s. diploma because their uncle has a hookup in the union.  And apparently they get all holidays off, and then they catch up by picking crap up on the weekend and then get paid time and a half.  By the way, LOVE THE STORM DRAMA.

Bhaskar.ing, I'm not sure I even understood that comment, actually.

Thank you, dark mistress.

I will.

Don't worry, Sunny,

surely all those things are certain to happen again sometime in the near future.

When I said "people", I mostly meant me, Frankenkitty.

I don't get why I have so little respect for them.

Nothing, A + B.

They came, fixed that toilet, checked all the others, and left.

Hahaha, be sure to let us know when those things happen

I don't think people
necessarily disrespect garbage men.  Sure, I'd hate to be one, but not because I don't respect them.  It's just not a career I'd choose unless I didn't have any other reasonable prospects because of the smell and heavy lifting. They wouldn't hire me anyway because of the lifting, so it's not even a possibilty. Take care

Um, I don't know, TAPS ... seeing as you're the one who said it.

Mademoiselle, Is that "goo" a play on words? LOL

Oh, don't worry, TAPS ... it'll definitely be "goo".

Why thank you, Battered Knight.

posted by Mademoiselle on August 22, 2007 at 10:26 AM | link to this | reply

I've asked around, Troosha, and the official term is apparently "waste management engineer".

So it's no wonder he looked at me like that, yesterday, when I said, "Good morning, garbage guy."

mademoiselle
Can't wait to see what they do to give you something to write about.  I'm sure it will be goo though.  LOL

You already asked that before, Factor.

How should I know what they make?

posted by Mademoiselle on August 22, 2007 at 10:22 AM | link to this | reply

Yeah, Strat. It really doesn't affect the overall humorousness much.

Mad
Where I live a "Sanitation Engineer" make a great deal of money.    Keep your eye on on your valuables!

Twenty years ago it was a lot...
I don't know what they make now?

posted by FactorFiction on August 22, 2007 at 8:42 AM | link to this | reply

Well, either way, it's a terrific story, right?

posted by strat on August 22, 2007 at 8:33 AM | link to this | reply

Which reminds me of something, Mia ...

I can't understand why teachers don't get more respect ...

posted by Mademoiselle on August 22, 2007 at 8:33 AM | link to this | reply

Strat, I read that, one time, a trash truck was lifting a dumpster, and the mechanism malfunctioned, and the dumpster fell right on the cab, crushing it to pieces!

Don't worry, though. The driver miraculously escaped without a scratch.

Or actually, come to think of it, he might have been killed instantly.

The garbage men where I live make more than teachers
and the garabge truck does all the work.

posted by MiaElla on August 22, 2007 at 8:17 AM | link to this | reply

I appreciate the low payed, stinky buggers --
I'm just not fond of the roar of the truck and the clashing of metal, glass ware and bottles at 6:15 in the morning....Oh wait, that was the stuff I put in the washing machine...never mind.

$19 an hour is a lot, Factor?

I don't work, so I wouldn't know.

posted by Mademoiselle on August 22, 2007 at 7:57 AM | link to this | reply

Also, Corbin, they have to deal with their coworkers' constant muck-raking.

In a manner of speaking, Ariala.

Yeah, every profession has its own union in the U.S., too, Foliage.

In total disregard of the communist principles this country was built upon.

posted by Mademoiselle on August 22, 2007 at 7:51 AM | link to this | reply

Well I have not seen their hourly wages lately

but many years ago I saw they were getting $19 an hour. I could not believe they made so much money then, so who knows what they make now?

Plus they get to pick from all the best garbage.  And don't forget perks like the six-pack of beer my husband put out so they'd take something they don't usually like sheetrock.

Mademoiselle - Well, up here we have a sanitation department that is
unionized and very well looked after.  Same with our teachers.  The teachers union is one of the, 'richest' in Canada.

posted by FoliageGold on August 22, 2007 at 5:38 AM | link to this | reply

Really, Foliage? That's weird because in the U.S. they are even lower on the pay totem pole than police officers and teachers.

P.S. My absense was explained here (sort of, but not really):

Mademoiselle - Welcome back. Where have you been? Garbage men
up here in the part of Canada where I live, are paid very well.  Get your plunger out for the plumber; might come in handy either way.

Good morning, Rcky.

I think the official term might be "sanitation engineer", actually.

Or maybe that's a "sewer worker".

posted by Mademoiselle on August 22, 2007 at 5:14 AM | link to this | reply

Good Morning Madame......they're not called garbage men anymore......
they're "refuse engineers!" LOL
