Thank you all for your responses

You can do what you want,

This much is true,

My way is better,

Do Wha the hell I tell you.

Kabu, depending on the nature of the earnings, you may be able to put some away to avoid taxes. If your earnings came from a trade or business, you could create a retirment plan. This would create a tax deduction. If the earnings are from a home-based business, you can take the home office deduction, put kids or grand kids on the payroll, etc.

Now if you windfall is due to capital gains, make sure you know the capital gains and losses netting rules to see if you can save some income tax dollars this way. Once you have all of your income tax issues resolved, and your portfolio needs are met, then you can consider letting the other half live by spending.
