Joe Love,
I am "the older" already LOL - nice to see you. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and The Monster.

Troosha,
thank you for your kind thoughts.. I wonder sometimes if I am remembered.. I hope so.  It does make me very sad to lose touch. Today I had the thought that I don't "have to" do anything any more; I only agreed to come here for two years. Sixteen is too long. All sorts of complications occur; the children have grown up here. The older one lives in Europe but wants to live here, and how can I abandon the younger one when he is just starting out in his adult life?  and so it goes.  Always tough to deal with, tougher still at this time of year.  I am staying in my home for Christmas this time; no sharing other people's extended families from the sidelines - this year, I need the quiet.
Merry Christmas, Troosha - you are an extraordinary poet and person :)

Hang on tight.  It only gets worse the older you get.  (grin)

How true that "So many people parade in and out of the memory banks".  Why is it that this time of year we reflect back upon the friends that have drifted - not because of any falling out just distance, circumstance, or life moving forward.  I do the same (look back, that is) and sometimes I feel sad that some truly wonderful people seem to have slipped away.  I console myself by thinking they are probably having the same thoughts about me.

Dear Muser,
what a nice thing to say - and you are right, many virtual friends here have touched my heart. You're a good friend, and you were one of my first visitors when I began nine months ago.
Merry Christmas to you and to Max :)

Wiley, thanks, I have.
Sometimes it really feels like I have lived three lifetimes :)  You are closer to the Queen's speech time than we are here (about 10 hours difference) - these days I tend to find it on the net the next day.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too, my friend.

Tonyzonit,
thanks.. :) I needed to hear that. I tried my best; time and distance were against me. Some of the differences aren't so great, and others still baffle me even after all this time.
Merry Christmas..!

Talion,
thank you for your thoughts.. most of my current friendships are with the parents of my children's friends, and we see less of them now than when they were all at school. Things do change, and we change with them it seems.
Merry Christmas to you and to Queen V.

tHE WORLD MAY BE GROWING SMALLER, MNEME...BUT PEOPLE SEEM TO BE GROWING
FURTHER AND FURTHER APART.

AND THEN...WHEN FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND NEIGHBORS SEEM SO DISTANT, SO FAR AWAY FROM US...WE ARE SOMETIMES TOUCHED BY A STRANGER...WHO BECOMES A FRIEND. MERRY CHRISTMAS, DEAR MNEME.

You've done a lot with your life kiddo, and it is difficult trying to keep in touch, I find it really hard to do now. I will try and catch the Queen's message and thanks for the reminder. Merry Christmas and Happy New year luv.

Thought-provoking and realistic about how ties are broken over time.
But I suppose we only met our old friends because we were in the same place and time as them. If we move, it's bound to happen that we lose touch. You're still the same person, it's not your fault. At least you've experienced more than one country and culture - that;s something to reflect on with some satisfaction, i hope.

The trials and tribulations of everyday life guarantee our personal relationships are in a constant state of flux. I have good friends I haven't seen or heard from in months, even years, but if asked to list those dear to me, I'd write their names. Are these classic cases of out of sight, out of mind or do these friendships remain viable despite the strains of time and distance? I'd like to say they do, but honestly, I'm not so sure. So why don't I pick up the phone? Write a letter or send an e-mail? Questions I've often asked myself. I know the answer, but I don't like it. I'd rather keep fond memories of what used to be intact and maintain the delusion these friendships haven't dramatically changed than find out for certain that possibly they have.

Ciel, thank you for your thoughts,
and you have a good Christmas too.  I never get to see old friends because there isn't enough time during my short visits, which are spent with family. At least the trips are slightly more frequent now; four in eighteen months. What I really need is about six months in one hit. Here's hoping..

it's nice of you to say so.  I'm sure there are many like me who have moved around.

Life grows... Time shifts things,
enlarges us, makes some things smaller by comparison...  but there are constants, and when we meet old friends, Time seems to have less power.

Have a warm and wonderful Christmas to add to your collection!
