i always try and make eye contact with the person i am talking to
but i know that in some cultures that is considered rude - it makes it hard when you meet new people!

This is an amazing photo of yourself...
It's sooooo...joyful. How did you take this? Or who took it?  I love that background.

mysteria

I try to but find a lot of people are uncomfortable with it.  Our eyes, after all, are portals to our soul.

Whinge... I hve a VERY good friend that cannot make eye contact w/people
and he is one of the most bestest people I know.  I am the only person to whom he can look at without feeling terriblyterribly shy...  Some of us are just that way...and it's totally okay

See I knew I was too neurotic for this, having a Woody Allen episode here!!
Am I insincere? I don't know am I?

What have I got to hide? Nothing I think.

Oh my God, the timer goes off in my head, I've just reached my limit of eye contact before blushing.  I try to relax & not think about it, usually am grand except when trying to make a good impression.

I-R-William Ah yess...the windows of the soul. Very true, and what
seems like the downside to it really could be a blessing, your friends surely want to help you work out that which is troubling you...

Mysteria.. Of course I look directly into the eyes of everyone I encounter.
Since eyes are considered to be the windows of the soul, it gives me the opportunity to see something that could be missed by looking away. Many of my closest friends are those with nothing to hide. There is a downside though. The same friends know when you are hiding something or bothered by something. This is why we remain close and are so few in number.

bel_1965 All moms should have such tendencies. I hope your daughter
knows how lucky she is to have a mom like you.  It is probably not totally evident to her right now at her age, what with all that occurs during that time of our lives...but she seems to be wise to boys and there brainless antics!

Mysteria

I tend to be the mother that let's my child go NO PLACE without an adult present.  I get the eye roll and the "but mom" from her all the time, but I know where she is and with whom she is with.  I don't intend to let up on that anytime soon.

She is bright and she has big dreams, she knows that letting some fool boy manipulate her into something she is not ready for can easily take them all away.  Hopefully, that will keep her safe and smart!

Whinge Really? That's fastinating to me...Maybe I am terribly self
conscious too, but I make eye contact anyway to torture myself!  It wouldn't surprise me!  I am, it seems, into torturing myself

bel_1965 your daughter is a smart one alright. Let's hope her brains
keep her away from the boys that might take from her that which they do not deserve.  Ooh, scary world esp. for the mommy of a 12 y/o girl...

Oh gawd no, makes me incredibly self concious, I do have some eye contact
but not too much, I would prefer to get my boobs talked to.

I do and I tend to be uncomfortable with people who don't
My twelve year old daughter is learning to tell the young men in her life that her breasts don't talk so they best look her in the eye while speaking.  I almost choked to death the first time I heard her say that.
