Thanks for this post. I hate when little children are harmed. Specially when it could have been avoided!

I know I am just as bad. My kids are older but with all the critters running around I always double check.

I think some cousin of my husband lost a child the same way.
(big family) Very sad and hard to believe how it even happens!

Oh how sad that is. That poor father and family.
It's certainly a paranoia of mine -- backing down the driveway when my sister's kids are outside. Is Jonathan out of the way? Blake? Caleb? Solomon the dog???????

bel...this is a good and timely post..we don't have young children...
anymore, but the neighborhood is crawling with them, young and old...backing out of our driveway, I always have to look back, and to both sides (past our neighbor's most irritating fnce), and back up slowly..I have come TOO CLOSE to hitting someone more than once...and it hasn't always been children..
it's so easy to forget to look!

That is a really good idea! I can't imagine the hell the father is going through at this point. Losing a child is horrible enough but these circumstances are bound to destroy him.

bel,
that is really terribly sad, I can't even begin to imagine what those poor parents must be going through, especially the father...
We live on a fairly quiet street, but there are some small kids in the neighbourhood. For many years now I routinely back my car into the garage, (theres never anyone in there) which means that I drive out and down the driveway with a clear and unobstructed view of the sidewalk and the street. It's a practice I can't recommend highly enough!

Tragedy
I feel for the parents. There can be nothing worse that being responsible for such an accident. It must take a hell of a lot for the parents to forgive themselves and it must scar for life. I pray I never find myself in such a situation.

It is a nightmare and happens a lot with
SUVs. My drive slopes down steeply and so we created two rules that must not be broken when we moved in: we must be 100 percent where every child is when we reverse out, and we reverse very slowly out of the drive.
I feel for that family as it is the cruellest moment imaginable

As I told Carl, that has to be one of those moments that one wishes with all their heart it had been them instead.

I think most parents know instantly what it's about. It's the worst possible thing I can even think of.
