The president of that august bunch of correspondents picks the speaker
each year, Mademoiselle.   He admits that he's only seen Colbert a few times and knew he was popular, so he chose him.  Others in the past have bombed also, like Al Franken at one during the Clinton years.

I missed it, too.

Politics aside, I'm not a huge fan of Colbert though. 

Who chooses the host for that dinner anyway?  It seems like every year there's an issue.

Perhaps next time they could take the safe route and hire Dave Chappelle.
