I enjoyed all four of the films immensely, Bunny...
But, I've never even looked at a single one of the books.

From Bunny
The cage must be very very secure and the lid firmly locked in place.  Centipedes tend to be "masters of escape" and you DO NOT want to be bitten by one (it is said to be excruciatingly painful).  Now, while you obviously would not die (unless you're allergic) the venom is strong enough to cause some nerve damage (even temporary paralysis) in the wounded area.

Are you a Harry Potter fan? This is the sort of creature that Hagrid would love.

Maintaining an ample supply of not only the pet food but also the food's food (vegetables, cricket feed, cricket "quencher", fish food, etc.) can be rather costly.

Fortunately, my mother is an animal lover and thus willing to foot the bill.

Cool. Do they consume a chunk of your budget? Lol.

Congrats on winning in the blogger quiz.

Some of my other pets are reasonably "affectionate"...

(I am able to handle all of my tarantulas and most of my scorpions)

However, Maleficent (like all centipedes) pretty much views anything placed in her cage as prey ... be it a cricket, a mouse, a hand or anything else.

MPO,

Egad!

How can you tell when these things are plotting against you?  Do they smile or laugh?  I can't help but wonder what their laughter sounds like.  A round of applause from them must be deafening.  Are they affectionate creatures?  Don't they bug you at all?

Billy, in all my experience with "untamed creatures"...
which includes volunteer work at the Insectarium, the Elmwood Park Zoo and the Philadelphia Zoo, as well as owning countless venomous bugs/arachnids (not to mention, what is technically a "wild cat") for several years ... I have been bitten a grand total of twice.  Both of which were accidental (on the animal's part) plus primarily my fault.

Maleficent loves rodents too, Layla...

though for very different reasons.

Ann, my mother has already informed me countless times that if any of my pets escape even once...

every one of them will be living out in the woods somewhere.  (As will I.)

Uhhh, what if she bites you? Once I saw a man in Japan sitting at a
cafe with a portable terrarium of rhino beetles.  He was getting some good action with those critters from passers by.

Awwww...they're adorable, MPO...really...

I think centipedes are beautiful, actually...as are millipedes.

I, myself am a rodent person.  Something about their little teeth--I just love it...  ~LB~ xoxo

Congratulations! The blogger is IDed.

MPO--- What adorable offspring. Just wondering . . . how does one gauge
the intelligence of a centipede?

I'm glad to hear some people saying that, Southpaw...
that has always been by opinion.

They are kinda cute though...

MPO...you are remarkable...

I'll just leave it at that.  Fascinating pictures and first hand accounts from your experiences.

You did indeed, Staggering Genius...
check my previous comment (to Bunny).

I'm sure she'll appreciate hearing that, Bunny.

I should also mention for anyone who (inspired by the cuteness) would like to own one themselves, you need to take special precautions.

Plus, keep in mind, a bite could conceivably kill a cat or a dog.

that's pretty scary...

From Bunny
At first I thought, "Why am I clicking on a photo of a giant centipede?" But she's actually kinda cute.

posted by Bunny on February 17, 2006 at 10:36 AM | link to this | reply

Brettnik, you wouldn't want this particular species...
anywhere near your child or house.  Though, she certainly would deter pests.
