It sounds fairly normal to me. The writing sites are great as far as
they go but it is inevitable that publishers will want people who can
deliver stuff which is specific to their needs and it is also
inevitable that writers will compete to deliver that.

I agree. I found a site posted here on blogit that someone was kind enough to share with the rest of us. I plan to contact them after the new year to see if they'll accept some of my poems and short stories, but I have back up plans as well.
It sadens me that such places which are supposed to help writers often end up stabbing them in the back.
By the way, I'm sorry not to have stopped by in so long. Please know I still enjoy reading you. I hope you had a very Merry Christmas and I hope you'll have an even better new year!!
