Well - I guess that all beautiful things have their prickly sides?  Like Roses for example?

Beautiful but of course their are thorns.

Perhaps the thorns express the idea that no one can ever 'have' beauty or a beautiful life without working for it.  You can't even go swimming in the surf with out taking the risk of stepping on a sharp shell edge or two.

I am glad you see the cup half full - so do I most of the time.

I understand what you are getting at, but you know, whenever I see that cactus, I think of delicious prickly pears!  I don't think this is necessarily the same as always seeing the glass half  full.
