- Go to Teachers Are Now The Weight Police?
I think
teachers are good people but they need to remember that kids sometimes need a little extra tlc. It isn't being a kid especially now when they have the stuff nowadays to worry about like safety at school, gangs, etc.

Great post
You know my thoughts of teachers lately. I have an overweight teen, that I struggle to help, and having gotten heavy as a teen, I realize how fragile they can be. I'd be all over that teacher. She'd be added to the back of the line with the other teachers that have truly overstepped their bounds. That is appalling that she would do this to the girls.

When I look at the number of teenage girls with eating disorders and recently I read that it's starting to show large numbers among teen boys as well, this horrifies me. Instead of making them feel bad about themselves I would like to see someone teach them good nutrution habits and encourage them at any weight to stay active and find something they love to do that with. I am a firm disbeliever in diets as I do not believe they work and if they do, you have to remain on that diet to maintain weight. I am a believer in eating right (with the occasional splurges and maintaining some level of activity.

As a former teacher......
and as a mother to a daugher who was terribly self-conscious of her weight (turns out she WAS Hypothyroid and has Celiac's Disease) I can surely understand where you're coming from! Most teachers these days need to go to Weight Watchers if they aren't already or if they're skinny, give 'em time - they'll need to go to WW, too, someday. I've been skinny and I've been fat and it's much easier to be skinny and look down one's nose........ I've had all the above experiences....... just hang in there, girls, what comes around has been there?

I expect there are more teachers like yourself than like this one, unfortunately when something of this sort is said to a child it tends to stick with them for a very long time.

As a Teacher myself, I find this very disturbing. You are suppose to encourage kids, not put them down.

They are fully intending to take this to the school board if need be. Courtney is lucky to have very supportive parents who are willing to fight for her. I just can't believe that someone who teaches teenagers didn't have more sense than this.

Military,
That teacher had NO right to do that. The parents should talk to the principal about this before she continues doing that to other kids in the future.

What a horrible thing to do to your brother. It sounds like your dad put his heart into that violin, I hope your brother still has it.
You are very right, there are some teachers out there who really make a positive difference to their students and hopefully there are more like that than like this one.

Amen to that. Unfortunately, at that age, such things will forever stick in a young person's mind. It will never go away. Hugs to Courtney.

There are a lot of good teachers who go the extra mile for their students but there are others who don't know beans about anything and they don't even have common sense. It reminds me of a music teacher my brother had for orchestra. Our dad had, many years before, rescued an old family violin from an abandoned house and spent the entire winter refinishing it. He rubbed down each coat of varnish with his bare hands. This teacher saw a gold cord around the neck of the violin and announced (snidely) to the class that it was obvious this violin had been used in our family as a wall ornament. We later visited a world class violin maker and all his violins hung by cords while the finish dried and thereafter until they were sold.
