I had an old table made from a wheel of fortune with the legs of an antique
Singer sewing machine.  But moving is expensive so it went (in pieces) to the neighbors when I left Colorado to come back to Athens.  I miss it, but still, it was just a piece of junk.  Sometimes possessions become burdens....

How you doing?? I see I'm not the only one up THIS early in the morning!! Couldn't sleep, so I'm working on it right now.

Dear Jo,

You are so good at this. You should give an award to yourself for fine writing. I love the pew. It is redolent with memories and associations. I Look forward to the next instalment.

Is not "evil" in the eye of the beholder? With the proper Feng Shui, there is no such thing, it's all about placement!

Hi Joe...great story...
Time to banish that Kitchen Witch     Watch her go up in a puff of black smoke when you move that church pew in.   Looking forward to the sequel I sense in the offing

Joe Love, you only had to say the words "something evil in the kitchen"
and I was anticipating something.

Joe_Love,
I picture Linda Blair spewing pea-green soup in your kitchen, but I have a feeling I missed a few posts.  I look around me as I'm typing and, like Hemlocker, I've rationalized being poor and cleansing my body and soul of "material things" or mainly anything with bad juju from the past, but everything is getting progressively better, since MG, my beloved, sells Thomasville furniture, so eventually we'll actually have something decent and get rid of the futon and the donated Ikea couch.

Joe_Love, you need to find a matching pulpit.  LOL

Mine is an antique dresser
handed down from my beloved grandmother. Doesn't match a thing anywhere in the house, but it's the only piece I would salvage in a disaster. I love New Harmony; it is a treasure trove of cool old stuff. I stayed there several summers when my mother owned property in town. Interesting little place. Looking forward to reading about the evil in your kitchen JoeLove. ;)

That kitchen has been evil since you got there! Maybe you need to seek a priest? The pew sounds wonderful, I can't say as I blame you on wanting it to be a focal point! Sounds beautiful..I have a couple pieces that are my treasures...they have been with me through out 3 marriages and countless relationships. My books, I love them and keep them close! Your very creative and somehow I don't see this pew collecting dust for very long!

Joe Love--
This is interesting because of the place afforded things "which once defined me."--and as usual, is very nicely written. We spent many years with nothing but Salvation Army style junk, and convinced ourselves we were never to be defined by "things".  Rationalization is one of the perks of being poor.  As we became a little more prosperous, we replaced bad junk with nicer junk.  Today we have some decent junk and even a few pieces which are not junk at all.  Nothing is of very great value, but we do treasure a few items, including two we know to have been lovingly crafted completely by hand.  One of my favorites is a painting we bought at an estate sale for $35.  They still don't define us, but we feel better having them around.   Thank you for your kind and perceptive comment in my blog.   I hope you are right.

Joe_Love...I'd love to see a photo of it!
I cherish an old walnut table that I'm currently "borrowing" from my mother.  It is approximately 80 to 90 years old and is certainly warn and bruised.  However, I can't find it in me to give it back.  It has its own personality.  Gorgeous detail and woodworksmanship!  I've come to love it!

Ah, the foreshadowing!
Something evil in the kitchen...I've got one of those, methinks.

Good work, as always, Joe!

Isn't it amazing as we look at our lives how the things that define us change?   There was a time when the most that defined me were stacks of books and cassette tapes (CD's weren't real popular yet) and now things are the least of who I am.

MayB, I realize this story wasn't too funny, BUT
Brace yourself. You won't believe where I'm heading with this story. lol I'll make up for the lack of humor in this one.

Joe Love, this pew story reminds me of something. We once bought a pew 10 feet long which we couldn't fit in our house. It was lovely but it stuck out no matter where we put it. It ended up in a friend's fine country house.
This also reminds of a truly wonderful story about furniture which was in a documentary which I was also in a for about five seconds.

And the evil in the kitchen is-----?  Please tell!  Then go ahead and put your wonderful church pew in there anyway.  You know your descriptions are so vivid that I see your wonderful living place.  As to the dust---Well, who hasn't?  Post a pix of your church pew sometime on your blog---in the kitchen.

Yes, you have written about the evils in the kitchen. The pew would be a good way to exorcise the demons.

Joe,
The thing I love is when you have something that you've carted around with you for many years and others can't stand it. I have a tomato picture that I got when I was like, 8. It's hideous and everyone hates it. I, however, cherish it! Put the pew in the kitchen!

just the solid feel of it

knowing that somebody was thinking about his/her crafted piece going into a church, gives a pew special influence. It has the good vibes in it...  I'm sure it could resist the evil in the kitchen, unless of course... that evil is... gasp... fire!!!

Okay--we've got to know about this evil in the kitchen!!
Do TELL!!!  :-)  ~LB~ xo

Hello Joe!
I guess what you must do is just put your special ornament in the kitchen - and to hell with evil! Btw, I used to have my own special rabbit. My grandfather once gave it to me when I was two, and I cherished it for many, many years. I still had it three years ago, but then some bug or other got into it, and I had to throw it away! It felt like killing a baby...

Hey Joe Love...Your design taste sounds bold and wonderful....
I like rare or odd pieces that no one else would think to collect. The 6-ft pew sounds like a conversation piece. Is it ornate in its woodwork? Put it in your bedroom at the foot of the bed, or does the Monster not like stuff like that in there? What could be in your kitchen? Nothing satanic?

Would love to know what the evil item is Joe!
It sounded beautiful in your apartment...you'll just have to get it jazzed up in your new shack!  I don't think I own anything like that...actually I did have a great ice chest that I stained and used as a cupboard for dishes...but it went in the split.  Dammit!  You've got my anger rising now....why the hell did he get that??
