Tigerprincess, he wants to learn. He is passionate about what he says--it needs to translate into how he says it

If he doesn't have the passion, he can't be saved. It's like an illness where you have to want to be cured to be cured.

"Bug" him and he won't realize he can "write" such a great paper...

Well, a sledgehammer will get his attention all righ.
You think that old standby "The Elements of Style" would help"? Just a thought.

Mary x, he is very dynamic, young and intelligent so it will only be a short-term thing.Grammmatically the work is all there. The magic that is in his speaking needs to come out in his writing

Ahhh... I see.
Well bold would be my middle name if I had one.

Mayb,
It sounds like you may be his Henry Higgins to his Liza Doolitle.  I wonder how long this could take?

Mayb,
. Does he want a prescription or formula for speechwriting? Aren't there books for that?  "Ten Easy Ways to Wow The Crowd."  or something like that?  What is he really asking from you?

How so?

Spitfire70, he is a gifted speaker and I believe that improving his writing will nourish that

posted by Azur on April 17, 2005 at 1:53 PM | link to this | reply

Ms N dependence, thank you for that. You have given me food for thought

MayB,
Well, if he's a good speaker, he obviously has potential. I suppose maybe writing is just not his strong point. Maybe he'd be better off speaking with a script written by a speech writer; or at least critiqued by one.

Here is a comment I just inserted into a student's paper:

Comment # 20  Blake, Blake, Blake, Blake, Blake. That is all I can think of to say at this point. It is a very well-written paper – grammatically sound – and well- researched it seems – yet you did not use in-text citations. In addition – in reading as there was much that seemed repeated – I am left to wonder if it was simply information gathered from various sources and well – dare I say? Copied and pasted? As to whether or not you proved your thesis? All I really know at this point is that once upon a time there was a real dude named Macbeth – as to why Shakespeare felt this guy was worthy of a play – the world may never know.
