Thanks for the comments!

Whacky - Hope your mom gets a break on the taxes.  It's really a shame how people in retirement and on fixed incomes are taxed and charge for things.

Thomas - You're probably right about all of it.  The Founding Fathers must be spinning in their graves to see how we are taxed these days.

Spitfire - Here's how I see it.  You pay income tax on your paycheck (the taxes are withheld before you even get the check), you get the leftover money, you buy something (in most states), and you pay sales tax on what you buy with your leftover money (that has already been taxed), and it's up to you to try and get some of it back when you file your income taxes.  You put some of your leftover, taxed money into savings and it earns a whopping 1% interest; you're taxed on that interest your money "earned."  You retire and collect Social Security benefits (not a gift since you and your employers paid into SS all the years you worked in the form of a tax), and if your income is a little too high (like if one spouse is still employed while the other is retired), you must pay income tax on the SS benefits.  Or, if you give certain amounts of your leftover, taxed money to a relative as a gift, you pay taxes on that money (for which the tax was originally collected before you got the paycheck) again.  It happens everywhere.

Witchflower,
As usual, this is full of great information! I just wonder, how does one know if they're being taxed on something already taxed before? (Did that make sense?)

Alright you asked for it! I have a right not to be a witbness against myself (5th). Yet, we must fill out the forms and explain our existance. Then, there isn't a judge who is gonna rule against his paycheck and they load the juries up with people who survive off government payroll. You do your time for tax evasion and then they still continue to steal your assets. Outlaw bunch.

I'm over taxed or rather my mo is. She worked a good portion of her
life. Then married dad. All the time paying the Social Security tax. The money was taxed when she paid it in and no they still tax it again when she gets it. I noticed they even tax the part that is paid into medicare... she never even sees that. gee. I had a C.P.A. do her taxes. Hope it is right. Shes charged enough. Whew!

I agree 100%
In some instances, we're taxed on money that has already been taxed, and it seems a generation is growing up thinking this is the normal way to live.   Something has to change.  Thanks for reading.

How true . . .
Taxes and fiscal management (and I use the term "management" loosely when referring to government) in this country are deplorable.
