See, now my classic comeback for not knowing an answer is "I like pie."

The "devil" thing is a classic fundy comeback when they have no answer for your questions or arguments.  It's what they're told to say.  Read up about them, there's some amazing stuff around.  Especially read what's written by former fundies - that's the stuff that knocks your head off.

Religion is such a sensitive topic . . .
The more entrenched a person is into their beliefs, the more personally they take it when someone else criticizes those beliefs. It is almost like a self-defense mechanism. Yet, we really know nothing about the nature of deity, do we? And don't mention the Bible as an authority because any other religion could bring out their own holy book as the authority. Which is truly it? who knows, and, in my case, who cares. Spirituality is the same in all believers no matter what their religion, and nature demands that whatever happens to one after death will happen to all. There are no special cases that do not realize the same track as anyone else.

I know what you're saying Witty.  It's easy to lose yourself in belief and faith.  A lot of people always say it's easier not to believe in anything, but that's so untrue, especially if you are brought up in a certain faith.  We can say that they are being controlled by religion, but they turn right around and say we are being controlled by the devil.  Who is right?  It's always going to be the person flinging the accusation.

Well, maybe it is, but the only ones I've ever encountered (both in 'real life' and on here) come over that way.  Do they sound to you as if they know their own minds?

That's a pretty harsh generalization there, Witty.  I'm no fundamentalist and, in fact, I'm not even sure I'm considered Christian anymore, but I have been on that side of the spectrum (maybe not as far over as P.I.M.P., but still) and 9 times out of 10 it is not because people want to control others.  I'm sure there are those that get a kick out of feeling superior and trying to bring people over to their side, but I can't accept an over-generalized statement saying that ALL fundamentalists are trying to control people.  That's just as bad as a fundie saying that EVERYONE who doesn't believe what they do is evil.

Fundamentalists are not doing it "out of love".  They are trying to control other minds in the same way theirs were controlled, and are still being controlled.  They don't realise what they are doing because their minds no longer belong to them.  They have stock-in answers for all arguments, yet they do not understand what they are saying.  They are simply parrots.

In regards to people "coercing" you into believing, they believe to be to doing it for you out of love.  There are some who really don't like the thought of people going to hell or being damned for eternity, and they try to help as many as possible.  A lot of the time it's not to "force" their beliefs, but to try and save you.
