Go to MY LIFE -- FOR MY CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN

american nightmare
If you're too old to be a baby boomer (so pre-1945) but not a war baby (1941-45)--that means you're pre-war baby, right? (not great at math). Sounds like you had an idyllic childhood (except for the hog butchering- nothing nice about that). My parents, city folks both, ran a chicken farm, of all things, on Long Island for a few years before I was born. So I grew up in the country around (empty) chicken coops and a lot of space. Nothing like having space. There's a commercial on TV for some kind of stomach acid pill, and they show a typical American neighborhood (probably near LA) from the air, nothing but houses crammed in tight, for miles and miles and miles. It's a nightmare to me. But it's the American dream for a lot of people, I guess.
