Comments on Those Poor Door-to-Door People

Go to Religion is a ShamAdd a commentGo to Those Poor Door-to-Door People

Close, but no Banana, Moonwind!

The Matthew verses do not say Christ went form door to door; it only refers to those he went into, without saying he did the door-to-door thing.

Acts 20 was written by Paul, and he did not even live concurrently with Christ; he was referring to his comings and goings, and even so, did not state he went to each door.  Acts 5, again, Paul, not Christ.  so many who followed Christ added to what he said with no basis in Christ's teachings.

You are right, we each interpret, and have a right to do so, but those who interpret Christ to have advocated door-to-door evangelizing are really, really reaching and are having to add to the words of Christ.  Isn't there a verse in the Bible that tells people not to add or to detract from Scripture?

Well Archiew, thanks for allowing me to express mine as well. And just for
the record, my dear blogger, Jesus did go door to door and he did command his followers to do the same. Take a moment and read (Matt. 10:7-13.) And view Pauls comment reguarding his ministry at (Acts 20:20,21) also (Acts 5:42.) So, see, it wasnt J.W's who started going door to door, however, they do feel they are following a command made by Jesus who also set the example followed also by the apostles. Just setting the historical record straight. Thats all from me.

I have no bone to pick with the door-to-doorers either. I always listen politely to the opening spiel, then I politely tell them that I'm not interested thanks, then I wish them good luck as they go on their way. Door-to-door working, whether it's religion, double-glazing or promoting a new restaurant is a tough and thankless task and I won't ever disrespect someone who does that kind of work.

In fact the people I do engage with at the door are those rehabilitating ex-prisoners or addicts that we sometimes get, selling kitchen goods. I'll always buy their extortionately-priced tea-towels just to help them help themselves.

Occasionally, you do get over-zealous foot-in-the-door merchants, so you have to deal a little firmer, whilst maintaining that mutual dignity.

Rambling now, so I'll shut up. I've spent too long on here today. I'm off to do some cleaning.

We all have our opinions, Moonwind . . . .

Jesus did not, to my knowledge from reading Scripture, approach private homes where he was not invited.  His preachings were in open, public places, such as the shore, the mount, the streets, etc.  Nowhere is he shown going door-to-door, nor does he tell his followers to do so.

Being sincere does not in any way make one less obnoxious, nor does it make one more spiritual, nor does it make one correct in their beliefs.  The Chrisitan religion is based on ancient mythology, pre-Christian by many centuries, and the Jehova's Witness organization have taken the relatively new religion of Christianity and further bastardized it.

Thanks for pointing out their sense of humor though, Moonwind, and I am happy to be able to add to their sense of joy each time they intrude on my privacy.

They are only following Jesus' example, who also went to homes looking for
people who wanted to come to know God. Those who had a desire to learn more, followed him, those who didnt, he didnt waste any time with, he just moved on. So do Jehovahs Witnesses. The reason they continue to come by, is because they may find someone different at the door next time, and that person may be interested in learning what the bible has to say. Everything they do, they do it for free. They dont try to get you buy anything, they accept donations that pay for the material. You would all be surprised to find that most Jehovah's Witnesses have a dang good sense of humor, so your ploy would only send them home with something to laugh about. And, please, dont think of them as poor... they are very rich in spirit!...lol

Good pooint, Jamryn!
I have come to the door with my Pentagrapm ring and necklace on.  All it got was stares and silence.  Once I did argue with the Jehova Witnesses who came to my gate in Kentucky while I was in high school.  I told them that I would be a fool to go for their religion since it preached that only about 244,000 people would get into heaven, and I was certain that, from the reaches of history, there are more than 244,000 people more spiritually attuned than I am, not to mention those in the future before the "judgement day."

Funny, Dave!
You should have stayed and dickered about theology!

and Jamryn, I remember early one Sunday morning when two very polite and gracious ladies called at my door to present me with the Watch Tower. I had just got out of bed and pulled on some loose shorts. I wasn't aware of it, but my -how shall we put it - gentleman's package - was not quite at rest and creating a kind of pointed bulge in my shorts, aiming at one of the poor unfortunates on the doorstep. We held a polite exchange, I took the magazine and off they went, but I would have loved to have heard their conversation as they toddled off.

What if?
Wonder what would happen  if the very min. that we open the door - we would have a book of witchcraft or a play boy magazine in hand. Then with out letting them get a word in edge wise start preaching to them? Say something like - Oh i am so glad to see that you stopped by today. I've been waiting to share this wonderful news with you. I know you're just going to love it. How long do you think they will stand there? Will they ever come back?

Good idea, Dave.
You are a true capitalist, one who strengthens our country!  I was considering becoming a Mason Shoes Rep and sellling them more comfortable shoes for walking about the neighborhoods.

I once had a plan to invite them in and try to sell them double glazing. Haven't done it yet, but I'm bearing it in mind.
