an obscure sexual break

A woman who "sprained her ankle" in 18thC had been seduced. For a lady to" break her leg or knees" ment pregnancy. I assume any "falling", similiar to "fall from grace", inferring being pregnant. But that's better than being six months " gone ". Sex sounds so hazardous in all those idioms. Sign in to see full entry.
