Introduction

The Advocatus Diaboli is the popular name given to an officer of the Sacred Congregation of Rights in the Catholic Church. The Sacred Congregation had the duty of determining who would be Beatified or Canonized. Established in 1587 by Pope Sixtus V (whose moniker might give one pause in itself), the official title of the office is "Promoter of the Faith," or Promotor Fidei.
