Everyone will buzz about Obama’s breathtaking new budget this weekend, but much of what they’ll say will be wrong. That’s understandable, what with most people having only misleading headlines or partisan cable shoutfests from which to glean their impressions. What follows is a selective (and idiosyncratic) guide to a few intriguing things you won’t hear elsewhere about the bombshell the president just dropped on Washington. The “class war” canard. The tax police are already having a stroke over... Sign in to see full entry.

Quote of the Day

I do not intend to reach any agreements with Hamas. Agreements I make with people who accept my existence," she said. "They do not recognize Israel and do not renounce violence and terrorism. They will not be a party to an agreement and therefore the people of Gaza have to expel the Hamas from within them." -Tzipi Livni, Israeli Foreign Minister Sign in to see full entry.

GM'S FANTASY RECOVERY PLANBy DAN CALABRESE YOU know that $12 billion bailout, er, "bridge loan" we asked for? Can we make that $18 billion? So asks General Motors in its report to Congress, explaining that it needs $6 billion more than it wanted just two weeks ago - but not to worry, because it's really learned its lesson this time... GM's "recovery" plan would be lucky to earn a C at a respectable business college. And what little substance it offers, the company is in no position to actually... Sign in to see full entry.

November 30, 2008 Mumbai Attack Monopolizes French News Following news outlets worldwide, the French press was in shock this week on the brutal terrorist attacks that took place in Mumbai. There were strong reactions to the survivors who flew back to Roissy on an Air France plane and regarding Pakistan's presumed involvement in these senseless killings. First, France received and gave assistance to 77 survivors of the attacks (among them 29 French, 19 Italians, 17 Spanish, and 5 Germans)... Sign in to see full entry.

"In return for any direct government aid," he wrote, "the board and the management [of G.M.] should go. Shareholders should lose their paltry remaining equity. And a government-appointed receiver - someone hard-nosed and nonpolitical - should have broad power to revamp G.M. with a viable business plan and return it to a private operation as soon as possible. That will mean tearing up existing contracts with unions, dealers and suppliers, closing some operations and selling others and downsizing... Sign in to see full entry.

When Dictatorships End with a Whisper By Caroline Glick With its nuclear weapons program, its control of Lebanon, Gaza and Syria, its massive influence in Iraq and Afghanistan and its messianic, global ambitions, Iran is rightly viewed as the greatest threat to global security today. One of the most disturbing aspects of the Iranian challenge is that on the issues of greatest concern to the West, there is no way to divide and conquer the regime. Anti-Semitism, anti-Americanism and the quest for... Sign in to see full entry.

Josh Marshall, TPM

Unfit for High Office 09.10.08 -- 9:56AM By Josh Marshall One of the interesting aspects of this campaign is watching the scales fall from the eyes of many of John McCain's closest admirers among the veteran DC press corps. I'm not talking about the freaks on Fox News or any of the sycophants at the AP. I'm talking about, let's say, the better sort of reporters and commentators in the 45 to 65 age bracket. To the extent that the press was McCain's base (and in many though now sillier respects it... Sign in to see full entry.

June 12, 2008 Tax Relief for the Middle Class Barack Obama Kaukauna, Wisconsin I just had the pleasure of sitting down with Ryan and Jenny Micke, and hearing about some of the challenges that they're facing in these tough economic times. We're going to continue our dialogue in a few moments, but I want to start by talking a little bit about my plan to provide meaningful tax relief for working people. Americans work longer and harder than the people of any other wealthy nation. We've built the... Sign in to see full entry.

June 09, 2008 Change That Works for You Barack Obama Raleigh, North Carolina Before we begin, I just want to take a minute to thank Senator Clinton for the kind and generous support she offered on Saturday. She ran an historic campaign that shattered barriers on behalf of my daughters and women everywhere who now know there are no limits to their dreams. And more, she inspired millions of women and men with her strength, her courage, and her unyielding commitment to the causes that brought us... Sign in to see full entry.
