Marijuana

Where exactly does the slang term "pot" for marijauna come from? I get grass... I get weed.. But pot?? How does one convince someone that smoking pot is illegal and shouldn't be done, becuase the government says it's illegal, even though for medical reasons, pot is given out?? How does one attempt...
