Independence Day in India - today what's the role of non-profits?
Is that about peple's profit? Yes and no. We do not have colonialism, so that's a gain. But we have neo-colonialism. That's a loss. How does a non-profit engage with this kind of situation? After Independence, Some non-profits took upon themselves the task of nation-building and that was possibly...

If people have to profit, then people must participate in the process
towards profit. Non-profits are usually perceived as groups of volunteers or groups that get funds that get spent for the particular social cause that the non-profit stands for and where there is no commercial value to the work. But nowadays given the need for non-profits and the need for the time...

Can the Government itself be an enterprise in people's hands?
No, not a public private partnership, but a public enterprise with all the services rendered together as a whole. Just like every enterprise has a social responsibility, so too this can be the case with this Government enterprise of governance? At the same care is taken that there is no...

Often people is the other word for men. So people's profit is invariably construed as men's profit, and then there are a few crumbs thrown in for women as a great favour. It needs to be said again and again and again that people's profit means profit of all people, not just men, not just women, not...

Somebody asked me whether there can at all be a concpt like People's profit
The question is well taken. If people work, what they will get is their dues. The profit will go to the capitalist. If people are to get more than their due for the work they put in, this can only happen in a truly co-operative set up where the profits are shared among the share-holders. But then...

Where development will be planned according to the available local
skills and natural resources and where all people notwithstanding their caste, creed, class, sex, tribe, will have a say, such is the development that is bottom and can mean profit for people. It would then be people not corporates who would be at the centre of development.

Profit over people - Noam Chomsky
Profit over people by Noa Chomsky is worth a read. Here's how its contents are explained on the "seven stories" web-site: Combining detailed historical examples and uncompromising criticism, Chomsky offers a profound sense of hope that social activism can reclaim people's rights as citizens rather...
