Ember's Gift
The silence in the house after one of my cats has died always deafens me. The ticking of the clock, the refrigerator's motor, all the normal household sounds I usually don't even notice mushrooms into a noise cloud that threatens to overwhelm me. My Ember cat died March 31 at 1:45 p.m. She'd been sick with some kind of massive infection in her nose and throat, and I'd taken her to the vet just days before her death.
