Pottery, Shawls, and a Night Sleeper Bus Ride

Today, at the crack of dawn, Gretchen and I arrived back in Delhi. It was 6.15 AM at the Majnu ka Tila - Tibetan settlement - bus station, and a dense fog enveloped everything. We took the night sleeper bus from McLeodganj at 6.30 PM. The bus has 60 seats and about 10 berths or sleepers as they are... Sign in to see full entry.

Hearty Soup and Family Time

Yesterday Supriya, Gretchen and I visited Sarika, Locho and their two new babies. The last time I saw Sarika and Locho was in December 2000. They lived in the Norbulinka Institute, working as thankga painters. In 2001 they have moved out of the Institute to set up a thankga school of their own. They... Sign in to see full entry.

The Dalai Lama, Little Tibet and the Buddha

Here I am once again in Dharamshala, which translated from Hindi means the place of religion. It is the home of the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetans. The Indian government offered this area to the Tibetan refugees in the ealry 1950s, when China overtook Tibet. I was in Dharamkot, north... Sign in to see full entry.

Pomegranate Soup, Dried Fruit Desert , and a Fire

It was New Year's eve. Gretchen is visiting from the US (the same person who visited me in Afghanistan in June 2006). We had several invites from various friends for 'quiet' get togethers. We decided to ask my two sisters and their spouses to join us for dinner and to usher in the New Year. My... Sign in to see full entry.

A life ends, and us all human beings are party to this. How bad can a person be? People do horrible... Sign in to see full entry.

End of the Year

It's the end of the year. It's Saturday, December 30. I am in my beautiful home, with a hot cup of spiced tea, watching the sun come up and replace the mist. The quiet and peace if overwhelming. Aloe chews silently on his dog chewy. Mahesh reads the newspapers in silence. And, Gretchen, who is... Sign in to see full entry.

Coffee and Lunch

Yesterday was a good day. My first appointment was coffee with Vinay - whom I have known for the last 15 years, as a DTP person, an astrologer, and a therapy client. We met at Barrista which is a chain of coffee shops. Vinay said what he always says when we meet there - it transports him into... Sign in to see full entry.

Making space for the new

Yesterday I cleared out all the cassettes we have accumulated over the years. It's a policy decision my husband and I took. We now have a car which accepts only CDs and MP3s. We have a home theatre system which accepts these and DVDs. So, we don't really have anything with us that accepts cassettes... Sign in to see full entry.

Leek Soup and Lasagna

Today was a holiday. After reading the newspapers, consuming many cups of tea, it was a breakfast of scrambled eggs, toast, strawberries and papaya. I decided to make soup with the leeks I had bought two days ago. It requires three medium sized leeks, 2 potatoes, a ittle butter, and seasoning -... Sign in to see full entry.
